Who became the first woman to perform a spacewalk during the Soviet Salyut 7 mission in 1984?
Answer
Svetlana Savitskaya
Answer
Svetlana Savitskaya
Svetlana Savitskaya became the first woman to perform a spacewalk during the Soviet Salyut 7 mission in 1984.
Savitskaya and cosmonaut Vladimir Dzhanibekov conducted the extravehicular activity on 25 July 1984. They tested a hand-held electron-beam tool designed for welding, cutting, and coating metal in the vacuum of space. The spacewalk lasted 3 hours and 35 minutes.
Savitskaya had already made history in 1982 as the second woman in space and the first woman to travel into space twice. Her 1984 mission made her the first woman to complete an EVA, decades before spacewalks by women became more routine.
Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman in space, in 1963, but she did not perform a spacewalk. Alexei Leonov had completed the first human spacewalk in 1965.
