Who became the first U.S. president, a leader whose era is remembered during America250?

The story behind the answer

George Washington became the first U.S. president, a leader whose era is remembered during America250.

Washington took office in 1789 after winning unanimous support from the Electoral College. John Adams became vice president. Washington served two four-year terms, from 1789 to 1797, and established precedents for the new executive office.

Before the presidency, Washington commanded the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and later presided over the Constitutional Convention. His public reputation helped persuade supporters of the Constitution during the ratification debate.

Washington was not the first person to lead the revolutionary government in every sense. The Continental Congress had presidents, including John Hancock, but that office was different from the presidency created by the Constitution. Washington was the first president under the new constitutional system.
