Who became the first person to drive a vehicle on the Moon during Apollo 15?
Answer
David Scott
Answer
David Scott
David Scott became the first person to drive a vehicle on the Moon during Apollo 15.
Scott commanded Apollo 15, which landed at Hadley–Apennine on 30 July 1971. Alongside lunar module pilot James Irwin, he used the Lunar Roving Vehicle, a battery-powered electric car developed for NASA by Boeing and General Motors. The rover allowed the astronauts to travel much farther from the lunar module than earlier crews.
Apollo 15 was the first mission to use the Lunar Roving Vehicle. Scott and Irwin completed three excursions and covered roughly 27.8 kilometers in total. The rover carried tools, cameras, communications equipment, and lunar samples across the rugged terrain near Hadley Rille.
Scott and Irwin are sometimes confused with Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt, who drove a lunar rover on Apollo 17. Cernan was the last person to drive on the Moon, but Scott was the first. Scott later commanded the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project backup crew.
