Who became the first Canadian astronaut in space on STS-41-G?
Answer
Marc Garneau
Answer
Marc Garneau
Marc Garneau became the first Canadian astronaut in space on STS-41-G.
Garneau flew as a payload specialist aboard Space Shuttle Challenger, which launched on October 5, 1984. He operated CANEX, a package of Canadian experiments, making Canada the first country other than the United States and Soviet Union to send an astronaut on a Shuttle mission.
Garneau was a Canadian naval officer and engineer before joining the Canadian astronaut program. His flight helped establish a long Canadian presence in human spaceflight; subsequent Canadian astronauts included Roberta Bondar, Steve MacLean, and Chris Hadfield.
A common mix-up is treating Garneau as a NASA astronaut. He was a Canadian payload specialist, not a member of NASA’s astronaut corps. He later flew twice more on the Shuttle and served as president of the Canadian Space Agency from 2001 to 2006.
