Answer
Ferdinand II
Who became Holy Roman Emperor in 1619? Ferdinand II became Holy Roman Emperor in 1619.
He was elected on 28 August 1619 in Frankfurt and crowned at Frankfurt Cathedral on 9 September. His accession came during a rapidly escalating crisis: Protestant Bohemian nobles had rebelled against Habsburg rule and soon offered the Bohemian crown to Frederick V of the Palatinate.
Ferdinand was a determined Catholic ruler and made the suppression of Protestant resistance a central aim of his reign. His policies helped transform the Bohemian revolt into the wider Thirty Years’ War. In 1620, armies supporting him defeated Frederick V at the Battle of White Mountain.
A common mix-up is with Matthias, Ferdinand’s predecessor, or Ferdinand III, his successor. Ferdinand II ruled as emperor until his death in 1637; Ferdinand III then succeeded him.
