The two other characters in the Folklore love triangle involving “august” are James and Betty.
“august” is told from the perspective of an unnamed girl who has a summer romance with James. James is already connected to Betty, and the three songs present the emotional situation from different points of view.
“Cardigan” is associated with Betty’s perspective, while “Betty” is narrated by James. The unnamed narrator in “august” is sometimes informally called Augustine or Augusta, but Swift did not give the character an official name in the song.
The names can be confusing because Inez also appears in “Betty,” and the characters’ names were inspired by the daughters of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. Inez is part of that fictional world, but she is not one of the triangle’s three central figures.
