Who announced Japan's surrender to the United States on August 14, 1945?

The story behind the answer

Harry S. Truman announced Japan's surrender to the United States on August 14, 1945.

Truman was the U.S. president when Japan accepted the terms of the Potsdam Declaration. On August 14, he announced that Japan had accepted the Allied terms and that the formal surrender ceremony would follow. News of the announcement prompted celebrations across the United States and other Allied countries.

In Japan, Emperor Hirohito's recorded surrender broadcast was heard on August 15 because of the time difference and broadcast schedule. This explains why V-J Day can refer to August 14 in the United States, August 15 in Japan, or September 2 as the date of the formal signing.

Truman had become president after Franklin D. Roosevelt died in April 1945. He authorized the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and remained president during the final surrender and the beginning of the occupation of Japan.
