Who accepted Japan's surrender on behalf of the Allied powers in Tokyo Bay?
Answer
Douglas MacArthur
Answer
Douglas MacArthur
Douglas MacArthur accepted Japan's surrender on behalf of the Allied powers.
MacArthur signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender aboard USS Missouri on 2 September 1945 in his capacity as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers. He signed after Japan's two principal representatives and before the other Allied representatives.
MacArthur had commanded Allied forces in the Southwest Pacific Area and had returned to the Philippines in October 1944 after the Japanese conquest of the islands. His position made him the senior Allied officer overseeing the surrender ceremony.
Chester Nimitz also signed the document, but he represented the United States rather than all the Allied powers. President Harry Truman authorized and directed U.S. policy from Washington but did not attend the ceremony in Tokyo Bay.
