Who accepted Japan's surrender on behalf of the Allied nations aboard USS Missouri?
Answer
Douglas MacArthur
Answer
Douglas MacArthur
Douglas MacArthur accepted Japan's surrender on behalf of the Allied nations aboard USS Missouri.
MacArthur was the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers and presided over the September 2, 1945, ceremony in Tokyo Bay. He signed the instrument after the two Japanese representatives had signed it, using five pens that were later distributed as historical souvenirs.
Admiral Chester W. Nimitz signed immediately after MacArthur as the United States representative. Other Allied representatives then added their signatures for China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.
MacArthur's role is sometimes confused with President Harry S. Truman's. Truman authorized and directed U.S. wartime policy as president, but he did not attend the shipboard ceremony. MacArthur represented the Allied command at the actual surrender signing.
