Who accepted Japan’s surrender at the 1945 ceremony covering Japanese forces in China?

The story behind the answer

He Yingqin accepted Japan’s surrender at the 1945 ceremony covering Japanese forces in China. The ceremony was held in Nanjing on 9 September 1945.

He Yingqin was a senior Chinese Nationalist military commander and represented the Republic of China’s armed forces at the event. He accepted the surrender from General Yasuji Okamura, commander-in-chief of the Japanese China Expeditionary Force.

The Nanjing ceremony was separate from the international signing aboard USS Missouri on 2 September. The Missouri ceremony formally ended Japan’s war against the Allied powers, while the Nanjing ceremony documented the capitulation of Japanese forces operating in China.

Chiang Kai-shek was the leader of the Republic of China, but he did not personally accept the document at Nanjing. This is why accounts of the ceremony identify He Yingqin as the receiving signatory.
