Which zebra species is the largest living wild equid found on African safaris?
Answer
Grevy’s zebra
Answer
Grevy’s zebra
Grevy’s zebra is the largest living wild equid found on African safaris.
Named after Jules Grévy, a 19th-century president of France, this zebra is native mainly to northern Kenya and parts of Ethiopia. It is distinguished by its narrow, closely spaced stripes, large rounded ears, and white, unstriped belly.
Unlike plains zebras, Grevy’s zebras do not usually live in large, tightly bonded herds. Males defend individual territories, while females and foals may form temporary groups. Their social system reflects the patchy availability of water and grazing in their semi-arid habitat.
Grevy’s zebra is also the most threatened zebra species. Habitat loss, competition with livestock, and reduced access to water have contributed to its decline. The plains zebra remains more numerous and widespread, but it is smaller and has broader stripes.
