Which youngest child of Cleopatra and Mark Antony bore a Ptolemaic royal name? The answer is Ptolemy Philadelphus.
Ptolemy Philadelphus was Cleopatra VII’s youngest child and her third child with Mark Antony. He was born in August or September 36 BC, probably in Alexandria or the eastern Mediterranean world, during the period when Antony and Cleopatra were consolidating their alliance.
His name deliberately evoked Ptolemy II Philadelphus, the second ruler of the Ptolemaic dynasty. The epithet Philadelphus means “brother-loving,” and the choice linked the infant to an earlier age of Ptolemaic power. At the Donations of Alexandria in 34 BC, Antony and Cleopatra presented him as ruler of Syria, Phoenicia, and Cilicia.
Ptolemy was still a child when Octavian defeated Antony and Cleopatra in 31–30 BC. He was taken to Rome with his siblings Alexander Helios and Cleopatra Selene. His later fate is unknown, although his sister survived and eventually became queen of Mauretania through her marriage to Juba II.
