Which Yosemite landmark is represented by The North Face logo?

The story behind the answer

The North Face logo represents Half Dome, the famous granite landmark in Yosemite National Park.

The company’s logo is a stylized outline of Half Dome’s distinctive profile. The formation rises at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley and appears rounded on three sides with a dramatic sheer face, giving it the recognizable shape that inspired the emblem.

The logo was created in 1971, several years after The North Face was founded in San Francisco. Choosing Half Dome connected the brand to climbing, exploration, and the California landscapes that shaped its early identity. The mark’s three curved bands are not a literal topographic drawing, but an abstracted version of the rock formation.

El Capitan is another celebrated Yosemite climbing landmark, but it is not the formation represented in the logo. Glacier Point is a viewpoint, while Yosemite Falls is a waterfall. Half Dome itself is also not a volcano or a true dome formed by a single rounded mass: it is an eroded granite rock formation with a notably sheer face.
