Which year marked C.S. Lewis’s death in Oxford?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis died in Oxford in 1963.

Lewis died on 22 November 1963 at his home, The Kilns, near Oxford. He was 64 years old. The date was also the day of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination and the death of writer Aldous Huxley, a coincidence that drew later historical attention.

At the time of his death, Lewis was known for several distinct bodies of work: children’s fantasy through the Narnia books, Christian apologetics, literary criticism, and fiction such as the Space Trilogy. His influence continued to expand after his death through new editions, adaptations, and scholarly studies.

The year can be confused with 1960, when Lewis’s wife Joy Davidman died, or with 1956, when they married. Lewis’s own death came seven years after their marriage and four years after Davidman’s death. He was buried at Holy Trinity Church, Headington Quarry, Oxford.
