Apple introduced the first iPhone in 2007, helping transform the company into one of the world’s most valuable businesses by market capitalization.
Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone on January 9, 2007, at the Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco. Apple released it in the United States on June 29, 2007. The device combined a mobile phone, an iPod, and an internet communicator in one product.
The iPhone was initially available through AT&T in the United States and used a 3.5-inch touchscreen. Its success created a major new business ecosystem around mobile software, accessories, and services. The App Store arrived in 2008, one year after the original handset.
A common mix-up is confusing the announcement year with the release year: both occurred in 2007. The first iPhone was also different from later models because it did not support third-party applications at launch.
