Answer
WGC Match Play
Answer
WGC Match Play
The WGC Match Play debuted in 1999 at La Costa Resort and Spa.
Its first edition was officially titled the WGC-Andersen Consulting Match Play Championship and was played in Carlsbad, California. Jeff Maggert won the inaugural event, defeating Andrew Magee on the 38th hole of a 36-hole final.
The tournament was one of the original World Golf Championships, a series created in 1999 to bring elite international fields together. Unlike the WGC events using stroke play, the Match Play used a single-elimination bracket. The field consisted of 64 players selected largely through the Official World Golf Ranking.
The La Costa venue hosted the first two editions, in 1999 and 2000. The event later moved to Australia, Arizona and Texas, and adopted several sponsor-based names, including WGC-Accenture Match Play and WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. It ended after the 2023 edition.
