Which woman was the first person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize?

The story behind the answer

Bertha von Suttner was the first woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1905.

Born in Prague in 1843, von Suttner became a novelist, pacifist, and prominent critic of militarism. Her best-known book, Lay Down Your Arms!, published in 1889, portrayed the human cost of war and became an influential anti-war work.

She corresponded with Alfred Nobel and encouraged him to support organized peace efforts. Her activism helped shape the international peace movement that emerged in the late 19th century. The Nobel committee recognized her work promoting arbitration and peace between nations.

Von Suttner was the second woman to win any Nobel Prize, after Marie Curie won the Physics Prize in 1903. She remains the only Austrian woman to have received the Nobel Peace Prize.
