Which woman was the first Nobel Peace Prize winner?

The story behind the answer

Bertha von Suttner was the first woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Austrian writer and peace activist received the prize in 1905. She became internationally famous for her 1889 anti-war novel Lay Down Your Arms, which portrayed the human cost of armed conflict and helped popularize organized peace campaigning.

Von Suttner corresponded with Alfred Nobel and encouraged his interest in peace work. She later became one of the most prominent figures in the international peace movement before the First World War. Her Nobel recognition came only four years after the first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901.

Marie Curie was the first woman to win any Nobel Prize, receiving the Physics Prize in 1903. Jane Addams won the Peace Prize in 1931, and Mother Teresa won it in 1979. Those distinctions are why von Suttner is specifically associated with the first female Peace Prize win.
