Which woman was the first female recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize?
Answer
Bertha von Suttner
Answer
Bertha von Suttner
Bertha von Suttner was the first woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
The Austrian writer and pacifist won the prize in 1905 for her sustained work promoting peace and international arbitration. Her best-known novel, Lay Down Your Arms!, published in 1889, portrayed the human cost of war and became an influential antiwar work.
Von Suttner corresponded with Alfred Nobel and encouraged his interest in supporting peace efforts. She was also active in international peace organizations and attended peace conferences at a time when women had limited political influence in Europe.
Marie Curie was the first woman to win any Nobel Prize, receiving the Physics Prize in 1903, but she did not win the Peace Prize. Jane Addams received the Peace Prize in 1931, and Mother Teresa received it in 1979. Von Suttner therefore holds the specific record for first female Nobel Peace laureate.
