Which woman reportedly identified Harold's body from marks only she knew?

The story behind the answer

Edith the Fair reportedly identified Harold’s body from marks only she knew after the Battle of Hastings. She was Harold Godwinson’s long-term partner, also known as Edith Swan-Neck in later tradition.

The story says Harold’s corpse had been badly mutilated and could not be recognised by his face or royal clothing. William’s soldiers therefore summoned Edith, who searched among the dead and identified him by private marks on his body. The account appears in later medieval narratives and became one of the most memorable stories attached to Harold’s death.

This answer needs the word “reportedly”: the identification is traditional, not securely verifiable. Accounts differ about Harold’s burial, with Waltham Abbey strongly associated with his final resting place and other traditions placing emphasis on the conqueror’s handling of the corpse. Edith the Fair is also easy to confuse with Edith of Mercia, Harold’s formal wife, or Edith of Scotland, a later queen. The familiar claim that she recognised Harold by intimate “love marks” is a later embellishment, not a certain detail of the original event.
