Which wolf is native to the Ethiopian Highlands?

The story behind the answer

The wolf native to the Ethiopian Highlands is the Ethiopian wolf.

The Ethiopian wolf, Canis simensis, is Africa’s rarest carnivore and is restricted to isolated high-altitude habitats in Ethiopia. Its range includes the Simien Mountains and the Bale Mountains, where open Afroalpine grasslands and heathlands provide habitat for its principal prey. It is also known by names such as the red jackal, Simien jackal and Abyssinian wolf.

Although it is called a wolf, its reddish coat, long legs and narrow muzzle distinguish it from the gray wolf. Genetic studies have linked it more closely with gray wolves and coyotes than with most other African canids. Earlier zoologists even placed it in a separate genus, Simenia, before later work supported its inclusion in Canis.

The alternatives are different animals: the side-striped jackal and golden jackal are jackals, while the African wild dog belongs to the separate genus Lycaon. Ethiopian wolves face serious threats from habitat loss, disease transmitted by domestic dogs and competition around shrinking highland ranges.
