Which Wikipedia sister project collects species information?
Answer
Wikispecies
Answer
Wikispecies
The Wikipedia sister project that collects species information is Wikispecies. It is a Wikimedia Foundation project focused on building a comprehensive, openly licensed catalog of living and extinct species.
Unlike Wikipedia, which is written primarily for a general audience, Wikispecies is aimed more directly at taxonomists and other scientific users. Its pages organize biological classification and nomenclature, including taxon names, synonyms, taxonomic authorities, publications, type material, and institutions that hold specimens.
The project was launched in 2004 after Benedikt Mandl coordinated discussions about creating a centralized species directory. The Wikimedia Foundation’s board approved its establishment by a 4–0 vote, and it officially became a sister project on 14 September 2004. Wikispecies complements Wikimedia Commons, which stores media files, and Wikidata, which stores structured data; neither has the same specialized purpose of maintaining a taxonomy-centered species catalog.
