Which Wikipedia project hosts free media files like images and videos?
Answer
Wikimedia Commons
Answer
Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons is the Wikipedia project that hosts free media files such as images and videos.
Launched by the Wikimedia Foundation in September 2004, Commons was designed as a shared repository for freely licensed and public-domain educational media. A file uploaded there can be reused across many Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia, Wikisource, Wikivoyage, Wikinews, and Wikibooks, regardless of language.
Commons is different from Wikipedia: Wikipedia primarily contains encyclopedia articles, while Commons stores photographs, diagrams, audio recordings, video clips, and other media. Wikidata is another sister project, but it focuses on structured data rather than media files. Wikimedia Incubator is used to develop potential new language editions and Wikimedia projects.
Although the files are free to access, “free” does not mean that every file has no conditions. Many require attribution or compliance with a share-alike license, and users must check each file’s copyright and licensing information before reuse.
