Which waterfall system lies on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe?
Answer
Victoria Falls
Answer
Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls lies on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The falls are formed where the Zambezi River drops into a narrow series of gorges. The main curtain of water is about 1,708 metres wide and reaches a maximum height of roughly 108 metres. Its combination of width and height makes it one of the world’s largest sheets of falling water.
Scottish explorer David Livingstone saw the falls in 1855 and named them Victoria Falls after Queen Victoria. The local Lozi name, Mosi-oa-Tunya, means “The Smoke That Thunders,” referring to the spray plume and the powerful sound produced by the falling river.
The Zambezi’s seasonal flow changes the appearance of the falls. Around the high-water season, spray can obscure much of the gorge, while lower water exposes more of the rock formations. Victoria Falls is part of a protected area and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
