Which Washington, D.C., memorial honors U.S. Marines who died in all wars?
Answer
Marine Corps War Memorial
Answer
Marine Corps War Memorial
The Marine Corps War Memorial honors U.S. Marines who died in all wars.
The memorial is also known as the Iwo Jima Memorial because its sculpture is based on the famous Associated Press photograph of Marines raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. It stands in Arlington, Virginia, near Arlington National Cemetery and across the Potomac from Washington, D.C.
The bronze statue was dedicated on November 10, 1954, the 179th anniversary of the Marine Corps. Although its image comes from World War II, the memorial’s inscription dedicates it to Marines who have given their lives in defense of the United States since 1775.
Memorial Day ceremonies there typically include military music, speeches, wreaths, and formal tributes to the fallen.
