Which was the last Apollo mission to land on the Moon?

The story behind the answer

Apollo 17 was the last Apollo mission to land on the Moon. NASA launched the mission on December 7, 1972, carrying Commander Eugene “Gene” Cernan, Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt, and Command Module Pilot Ronald Evans. Cernan and Schmitt landed in the Taurus–Littrow valley, while Evans remained in lunar orbit.

Apollo 17 was the sixth successful Apollo lunar landing and included the longest surface stay of the program. The astronauts conducted three lunar excursions, collected geological samples, and used the Lunar Roving Vehicle to travel much farther from the landing site than earlier crews.

The mission is also notable because Harrison Schmitt was a professional geologist, the only trained geologist to walk on the Moon. Gene Cernan became the last person to leave the lunar surface. Apollo 14, Apollo 15, and Apollo 16 all landed earlier, so none can be the final Apollo landing.
