Which vulture is famous for feeding mainly on bones?

The story behind the answer

The bearded vulture is famous for feeding mainly on bones.

The bearded vulture, also called the lammergeier, is a large Old World vulture found in mountainous regions of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Its unusually specialized diet allows it to exploit the hard skeletal remains left after other scavengers have eaten the meat.

The bird carries large bones high into the air and drops them onto rocky slopes, where they break into smaller pieces. It then swallows many fragments whole. Its stomach is highly acidic, helping it digest this mineral-rich food. Bone marrow is especially valuable because it contains concentrated fat and nutrients.

The bearded vulture is not simply a bone-breaking version of a typical vulture. Its diet, anatomy, and behavior occupy a distinctive ecological niche. Adults have a dark beard-like feather tuft below the bill, while the species’ naturally orange-stained chest feathers often come from bathing in mineral-rich or iron-rich water.
