Which Volkswagen model became the first automobile to sell more than 20 million units worldwide?
Answer
Volkswagen Beetle
Answer
Volkswagen Beetle
The Volkswagen Beetle became the first automobile to sell more than 20 million units worldwide.
Volkswagen produced the rear-engined, air-cooled compact car from 1938 until 2003. Its simple mechanical design, distinctive rounded body, and low operating costs helped it find customers across Europe, the Americas, and many other markets. Production continued in Mexico long after the original German production ended.
In 1972, the Beetle surpassed the Ford Model T’s production total, becoming the world’s best-selling car at that point. Volkswagen ultimately built more than 21.5 million examples, making the model one of the most recognizable vehicles in automotive history.
The Toyota Corolla later exceeded the Beetle’s cumulative total, so the Beetle is not the all-time production leader today. Its milestone refers specifically to being the first model to pass 20 million units.
