Which volcano produced the enormous Taupo eruption around AD 232?

The story behind the answer

Taupo Volcano produced the enormous eruption dated to around AD 232.

Taupo is a volcanic caldera in New Zealand's North Island, beneath and around Lake Taupo. Its most recent major eruption, known as the Hatepe or Taupo eruption, occurred around AD 232. It expelled vast quantities of pumice and ash and is regarded as one of the largest eruptions of the past 5,000 years.

The eruption dramatically altered the central North Island and deposited ash across parts of New Zealand. Lake Taupo occupies much of the caldera formed by earlier eruptions, so the modern landscape is the result of repeated large-scale volcanic activity rather than a single cone.

The approximate date has been refined through radiocarbon and other dating methods. Taupo is sometimes mistaken for a conventional mountain volcano such as Ruapehu, but it is chiefly a caldera system with a long record of explosive eruptions.
