Mount Cameroon is the highest point in Cameroon, reaching about 4,095 metres.
This broad active volcano rises near the Gulf of Guinea and is one of Africa’s largest volcanic mountains. It is part of the Cameroon Volcanic Line, a chain of volcanic centers extending from the mainland into the Gulf of Guinea islands.
Mount Cameroon has erupted many times in the historical period, with notable eruptions in 1999 and 2000. Its eruptions commonly produce basaltic lava flows that can travel toward populated areas and the coast.
The mountain is also famous for the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope, an annual endurance race held on its slopes. It should not be confused with Mount Kenya or Mount Kilimanjaro: those are East African peaks, while Mount Cameroon stands in West Africa and is an active volcano.
