Which volcano is the highest mountain in West Africa, rising to 4,095 metres?

The story behind the answer

Mount Cameroon is the highest mountain in West Africa, rising to 4,095 metres.

Mount Cameroon is a large active volcano in southwestern Cameroon, near the Gulf of Guinea. It is also called Fako by local communities. The mountain is part of the Cameroon Volcanic Line, a chain of volcanic features extending across the region and into the Atlantic Ocean.

Its broad slopes support tropical rainforest, montane habitats, and agricultural land. The volcano has produced lava flows and eruptions in historical times, including activity documented in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The annual Mount Cameroon Race of Hope crosses its slopes.

Mount Cameroon is distinct from Mount Elgon, which lies farther east in Uganda and Kenya. It is also not Africa's highest mountain overall: that title belongs to Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro. Mount Cameroon holds the more specific distinction of being West Africa's highest peak.
