Which volcano is the highest mountain in Turkey, reaching 5,137 metres near the Iranian border?

The story behind the answer

Mount Ararat is Turkey’s highest mountain, reaching 5,137 metres.

Ararat is a snow-covered, dormant compound volcano in eastern Turkey near the borders of Iran, Armenia, and Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan region. Its summit is a broad volcanic massif dominated by Greater Ararat, while Little Ararat forms a lower neighbouring cone.

The mountain is often linked in popular tradition with the biblical story of Noah’s Ark, but that religious association is not geological evidence of an ark landing. Ararat’s summit elevation and national prominence are the stable geographic facts.

The volcano has not had a confirmed historical eruption, although geological studies indicate activity during the Holocene. Its upper slopes are heavily glaciated, and the mountain is a prominent landmark across the surrounding high plateau.
