Which volcano is the highest mountain in Spain, rising 3,715 metres on Tenerife?

The story behind the answer

Mount Teide is the highest mountain in Spain, rising 3,715 metres on Tenerife.

Teide is a stratovolcano within Teide National Park on the island of Tenerife, part of Spain’s Canary Islands. Its summit stands inside the Las Cañadas volcanic caldera, a vast high-altitude landscape shaped by repeated eruptions and collapses.

The volcano is also the highest point above sea level in the Atlantic Ocean islands. It is often confused with Pico Viejo, another major volcano in Tenerife, but Teide is the island’s highest summit and the better-known volcanic landmark.

Teide remains an active volcanic system, although its most recent confirmed eruption was the 1909 Chinyero eruption elsewhere on Tenerife. The national park became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.
