Which volcano is Africa’s highest mountain and a dormant stratovolcano in Tanzania?

The story behind the answer

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and a dormant stratovolcano in Tanzania. Its highest summit, Uhuru Peak on Kibo’s crater rim, reaches 5,895 metres above sea level.

Kilimanjaro is a volcanic massif made of three main cones: Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. Kibo is the central and highest cone, while Mawenzi and Shira are extinct. Kibo is dormant rather than extinct because it still retains geothermal activity and could theoretically erupt again.

The mountain’s snow and ice have famously declined over the past century, although its summit glaciers are not simply a direct measure of volcanic activity. Kilimanjaro is sometimes mistaken for a single sharply pointed cone; in reality, it is a broad volcanic complex with multiple cones and a large summit crater.
