Vogue Italia was the first Vogue edition to publish a full issue devoted to Black models.
The July 2008 issue, edited by Franca Sozzani, featured only Black models in its fashion pages and cover imagery. It became widely known as the “Black issue” and was created in response to the underrepresentation of Black models in mainstream fashion media.
The issue featured models including Naomi Campbell, Jourdan Dunn, and others, and it attracted substantial international attention. Its success also raised debate about whether a special issue should be needed to showcase Black talent.
This answer is distinct from later individual covers and from other editions’ diversity initiatives. The landmark full issue was produced by Vogue Italia in 2008.
