Which VMA category was first given in 1999 as Best Pop Video?

The story behind the answer

The VMA category first introduced in 1999 as Best Pop Video is now called Best Pop.

MTV created the category during the late-1990s surge of teen pop and related mainstream styles. Although it began as Best Pop Video, its nominees have sometimes included dance, R&B, pop-rock and reggaeton performers, so the category has never been limited to one narrow sound.

The name changed when MTV removed the word “Video” from its genre-category titles. Best Pop Video was discontinued after 2016 when MTV temporarily eliminated genre categories, then returned in 2008 before receiving its current shortened name. The award has remained a regular part of the VMA genre lineup.

Ricky Martin won the inaugural 1999 award for “Livin’ la Vida Loca.” Britney Spears, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande share the record for most wins in the category, with three each. Best Pop should not be confused with Best Rock, Best R&B or Best Alternative, which have separate histories.
