Team Rocket is the main criminal organization in the original Pokémon games. It appears throughout Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow as a group that exploits Pokémon for profit and power.
The organization is led by Giovanni, who also serves as the Gym Leader of Viridian City. Team Rocket members obstruct the player's progress in locations such as Mt. Moon, Celadon City, Pokémon Tower, and Silph Co. Their activities include stealing Pokémon and attempting to seize the Master Ball prototype.
The player eventually confronts Giovanni several times, culminating in a battle at the Viridian Gym. After Giovanni is defeated, Team Rocket's operations in Kanto collapse, although the organization returns in later games and stories.
Team Rocket is distinct from later regional villainous teams. Team Magma and Team Aqua are associated with Hoenn, Team Galactic with Sinnoh, and Team Plasma with Unova. The recurring anime trio Jessie, James, and Meowth belong to Team Rocket but are separate from the game's main leadership structure.
