Which Viking king was defeated and killed at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066?

The story behind the answer

Harald Hardrada was defeated and killed at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066.

Harald was king of Norway from 1046 until his death. He invaded England in September 1066 with an army seeking to claim the English throne, supported by his ally Tostig Godwinson, the exiled brother of England’s King Harold Godwinson.

The English army marched rapidly north after learning of the invasion. On 25 September 1066, Harold Godwinson’s forces surprised Harald’s army near York. Harald was killed by an arrow to the throat, according to later tradition, and the Norwegian invasion collapsed. The English king then had to march south to face William of Normandy at the Battle of Hastings. Harald is sometimes confused with Harold Godwinson because their names are similar, but they were opposing rulers in the same campaign.
