Which Viking-era seafarer told King Alfred about sailing around the North Cape?
Answer
Ohthere of Hålogaland
Answer
Ohthere of Hålogaland
The Viking-era seafarer who told King Alfred about sailing around the North Cape was Ohthere of Hålogaland.
Ohthere was a wealthy man from Hålogaland in northern Norway. Around AD 890, he visited the court of Alfred the Great, king of Wessex, and described his travels and homeland. His account was written down in Old English and incorporated into a translation of Orosius’s history.
Ohthere reported sailing north and then east around the North Cape, reaching the White Sea region. He also described the peoples, animals and natural resources of the far north, including the Sámi and large numbers of whales and walruses.
His testimony is one of the most important written sources for Viking-Age geography and northern European trade. It is not a saga narrative, and Ohthere should not be confused with Wulfstan, another traveler whose account appears in the same work.
