Which Viking Age city in modern Germany was known as Hedeby?
Answer
Haithabu
Answer
Haithabu
Haithabu is the modern German name for the Viking Age city known as Hedeby.
Hedeby stood near the base of the Jutland Peninsula, close to the narrow Schleswig isthmus. Its position linked the North Sea and Baltic trade routes, helping it become one of Scandinavia’s most important settlements. Merchants and craftspeople from northern Europe and beyond operated there during its peak.
Written sources and archaeology show a town with workshops, houses, defensive earthworks, and a busy harbor. Finds include coins, weights, glass, pottery, tools, and evidence of long-distance commerce. The site is sometimes confused with Birka in Sweden or Kaupang in Norway, which were also major Viking trading centers. Hedeby declined after attacks in the 11th century, and the settlement was eventually abandoned.
