Answer
The Battle of Maldon
Answer
The Battle of Maldon
The Battle of Maldon was the Viking-age battle fought in 991 and commemorated by the Old English poem The Battle of Maldon.
The battle took place near Maldon in Essex, England, when an English force led by Byrhtnoth confronted a Viking army. The attackers won, and the English government subsequently agreed to pay tribute, commonly called Danegeld, to discourage further attacks.
The surviving poem does not provide a complete historical report, but it vividly presents the loyalty and courage of Byrhtnoth’s retainers. Its famous themes include battlefield honor, comitatus, and the consequences of a leader’s decisions.
The poem survives only in a damaged manuscript, so parts of the narrative are missing. The battle should also be distinguished from later conflicts such as Brunanburh and the battles connected with Cnut’s conquest of England.
