Which video game console was released by Nintendo in 2017?

The story behind the answer

The video game console released by Nintendo in 2017 was the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo launched the Switch on March 3, 2017, in Japan, North America, most Western markets, and several other regions. Its defining feature was a hybrid design: it could function as a home console in a dock connected to a television or as a portable system using its built-in screen.

The console’s detachable Joy-Con controllers supported several play styles. Players could attach them to the sides of the handheld unit, use them separately, or connect them to a Joy-Con grip. The launch package also included a dock, controller straps, a grip, a power adapter, and an HDMI cable.

The Switch is often confused with the Wii U because both support television and handheld-style play. The Wii U, however, launched in 2012 and used a separate GamePad linked to the console. The Switch replaced Nintendo’s home-console and handheld hardware lines with one platform. Its launch title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild became one of its signature games.
