Which vessel served as the host ship for every Operation Sail event, including the 1976 Bicentennial edition?

The story behind the answer

USCGC Eagle served as the host vessel for every Operation Sail event, including the 1976 Bicentennial edition.

USCGC Eagle is a United States Coast Guard barque used for training cadets and officers. Its sailing role made it a natural ceremonial centerpiece for Operation Sail, a series designed to promote goodwill, maritime cooperation, and sail training.

The cutter hosted all six Operation Sail events held through 2012. These events took place in 1964, 1976, 1986, 1992, 2000, and 2012. Each edition brought tall ships and naval vessels together, usually ending with a Parade of Ships on the Hudson River and in New York Harbor.

The 1976 edition was especially significant because it formed part of the United States Bicentennial celebrations. Eagle should not be confused with USS Constitution, the historic naval frigate known as “Old Ironsides.” Constitution participated in American maritime history, but USCGC Eagle was the recurring Operation Sail host vessel.
