Which venture firm backed Burbn alongside Andreessen Horowitz in 2010?

The story behind the answer

Baseline Ventures backed Burbn alongside Andreessen Horowitz in 2010.

Burbn was Kevin Systrom’s early mobile check-in project, developed before Instagram became a dedicated photo-sharing service. On March 5, 2010, Systrom closed a $500,000 seed round from Baseline Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz. The funding helped him continue developing the product and later bring Mike Krieger onto the project.

Burbn originally combined location check-ins with plans, points, social interaction, and photo posting. Systrom and Krieger eventually concluded that the service was too complicated and that photo-sharing was its strongest feature. They stripped the product down, renamed it Instagram, and launched the new service in October 2010.

A common mix-up is confusing Baseline Ventures with later Instagram investors. Benchmark Capital led Instagram’s $7 million Series A round in February 2011, while Baseline Ventures was part of the earlier Burbn seed financing. Andreessen Horowitz was the other named firm in that initial round.
