Which vegetable is also known as a "courgette"?
Answer
Zucchini
Answer
Zucchini
The vegetable also known as a “courgette” is the zucchini.
“Courgette” is the standard name used in Britain, France, Ireland, New Zealand, and several other countries, while “zucchini” is more common in North America and Australia. Both names refer to the same summer squash, botanically classified as a cultivar of Cucurbita pepo.
Zucchini originated in northern Italy in the nineteenth century. The word comes from the Italian zucchino, a diminutive of zucca, meaning a gourd or squash. The French word courgette is related to courge, a broader term for plants in the squash family.
Although cooks treat zucchini as a vegetable, the fruit is botanically a berry called a pepo because it develops from the flower’s ovary. It is normally harvested while immature, when the skin, seeds, and flesh are still tender. Mature fruits can become very large and are sometimes called marrow, which is a related culinary term rather than a completely different plant.
