Which van Gogh painting at the Met features a wheat field and cypress trees?

The story behind the answer

The van Gogh painting at the Met featuring a wheat field and cypress trees is Wheat Field with Cypresses.

Van Gogh painted it in 1889 while staying at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. During this period, cypress trees became one of his strongest recurring motifs, appearing against wheat fields, olive groves, and turbulent skies. The Met’s canvas is an oil painting dated 1889 and was acquired through the Annenberg Foundation Gift in 1993.

The title can be confused with A Wheatfield, with Cypresses, another version of the subject painted later in 1889 and now associated with the National Gallery in London. Van Gogh also made a reed-pen drawing and multiple painted versions of the composition. The Met’s work is especially recognizable for its horizontal format, brilliant blue-and-green landscape, golden wheat, and tall dark cypress forms.

It is also easy to confuse the scene with The Starry Night, painted during the same Saint-Rémy period. Both works contain cypresses, but The Starry Night is a night sky over a village, while this Met painting is a sunlit summer landscape.
