Which U.S. university did Bill Gates leave without graduating in 1975?

The story behind the answer

Bill Gates left Harvard University without graduating in 1975.

Gates entered Harvard in 1973 and studied subjects including mathematics and computer science. He spent much of his time pursuing software opportunities with Paul Allen, who was working in the technology industry.

When MITS released the Altair 8800, Gates and Allen saw an opportunity to supply software for the new computer. Gates left Harvard during his sophomore year to devote himself to Microsoft, which the two had founded that same year.

Leaving Harvard did not mean Gates had never attended college; he completed several semesters before departing. Harvard later awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2007, decades after he had left without earning a bachelor’s degree.
