Which U.S. Supreme Court justice was also a U.S. president?

The story behind the answer

The U.S. Supreme Court justice who was also a U.S. president was William Howard Taft.

Taft is the only person in American history to serve both as president and Chief Justice of the United States. He was president from 1909 to 1913 and later joined the Supreme Court after President Warren G. Harding nominated him as Chief Justice in 1921.

Taft had a long legal and public career before reaching the White House. He served as a federal judge, Solicitor General, head of the Philippine Commission, civil governor of the Philippines, and Secretary of War. His experience in government and law made the two roles unusually connected in his career.

As Chief Justice from 1921 to 1930, Taft supported reforms that strengthened federal court administration and helped secure funding for the Supreme Court Building. Charles Evans Hughes, Earl Warren, and John Marshall were also important judicial figures, but none served as U.S. president.
