Which US stock exchange suffered a dramatic collapse on 24 October 1929, the day known as Black Thursday?

The story behind the answer

The New York Stock Exchange suffered a dramatic collapse on 24 October 1929, the day known as Black Thursday.

Black Thursday was the first major panic day of the 1929 Wall Street Crash. Trading volume surged as investors tried to sell shares, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell sharply. A group of prominent bankers bought selected stocks later in the day, temporarily calming the market.

That intervention did not end the crisis. Selling returned on Black Monday and became even more severe on Black Tuesday, 29 October. The sequence shows why the crash cannot accurately be reduced to one afternoon or one date.

The New York Stock Exchange was the leading US marketplace for listed shares, so its turmoil had wide financial effects. The crash was connected to speculation, margin debt, uneven economic growth, and weaknesses in the banking system. It became a major turning point in public attitudes toward securities regulation and financial disclosure.
