Which U.S. stock exchange is commonly identified by the abbreviation NYSE?

The story behind the answer

NYSE is the abbreviation for the New York Stock Exchange, a major U.S. stock exchange.

The NYSE is located at 11 Wall Street in New York City. Its institutional history is commonly traced to the Buttonwood Agreement of 1792, while the name New York Stock Exchange was adopted in 1863. The exchange became a central marketplace for trading shares of large U.S. and international companies.

For much of its history, the NYSE was associated with open outcry, in which floor brokers used face-to-face trading. Modern NYSE trading combines electronic systems with designated market makers and a physical trading floor. Most orders are handled electronically, although the floor remains part of the exchange’s operation and identity.

NYSE is not a synonym for the entire U.S. stock market. Other venues, including Nasdaq, also list and trade stocks. A company’s exchange listing can affect its ticker, listing rules, and investor visibility.
